Bail Template for Pendants

I searched online for a tutorial on how to make a bail for my pendants. I couldn't  find one that had a template - ie the actual shape you need to cut out of sheet metal to make a decent looking bail.

Then it came to me: I could make one out of the inside of two oval shapes! It's easy to customise to any size, and works well as a bail shape. If this can help anyone who has encountered a similar problem - brilliant!

1. Using a graphics programme, draw an oval shape and duplicate it. Overlap the ovals, you will be after the shape in the middle, here in red:

2. Crop the shapes so you just get the middle bit - each graphic programme works a little differently - I used an ancient version of 'Fireworks' for this.

3. Play around with the sizing until you get the size you need, then print out the shapes. Stick them on to your sheet metal - in this case I have made two sizes, and used some scrap copper sheet.

4. Cut out using your saw, then anneal to soften the metal. Pickle, and bend into shape using pliers.
These are my favourite pliers and I used the smallest section.

5. This is what they will look like - front and side view...

7. Polish and they will be ready to be soldered on to your pendant... Or solder the bottom edge and fix on to a jump ring!
